Abstract
A new species of the genus Aspella Mörch, 1877 (Gastropoda: Muricidae), Aspella tusciae n. sp., is here described from the Pliocene of Tuscany, Italy, to indicate a species with paucispiral protoconch often reported as A. anceps (Lamarck, 1822) or A. emmae (Boettger, 1902) by authors dealing with Mediterranean Pliocene assemblages. The European Neogene congeners A. emmae (Boettger, 1902), A. subanceps (d’Orbigny, 1852) and A. pacaudi Goret, Ledon & Pons, 2013 are separated by their multispiral protoconch.
The protoconch of A. sanfrae Novelli & Gambarino, 1984 is unknown, but it is separated from A. tusciae n. sp. based on teleoconch characters. We report for the first time A. pacaudi Goret, Ledon & Pons, 2013 for the Tuscan and Italian Pliocene. Separation of A. pacaudi from A. tusciae in the absence of their protoconch can be problematic. In the Tuscan Pliocene A. pacaudi is limited to the Zanclean and A. tusciae to the Piacenzian.

Durante il riesame di una serie di gasteropodi pliocenici toscani, abbiamo riconosciuto e qui descriviamo la nuova specie Aspella tusciae n. sp. (Gastropoda: Muricidae), in precedenza generalmente nota come Aspella anceps (Lamarck, 1822) prima e successivamente come Aspella emmae (Boettger, 1902). Si differenzia dalle altre specie neogeniche A. emmae (Boettger, 1902), A. subanceps (d’Orbigny, 1852) e A. pacaudi Goret, Ledon & Pons, 2013 per avere la protoconca di tipo paucispirale. La protoconca di A. sanfrae Novelli & Gambarino, 1984 è sconosciuta, ma si distingue da Aspella tusciae n. sp. per diversi caratteri morfologici. Si segnala per la prima volta per il Pliocene toscano ed italiano A. pacaudi Goret, Ledon & Pons, 2013. In assenza della protoconca, la separazione tra A. pacaudi e A. tusciae può essere problematica.
